Heart of the Valley Triathlon 2013 - Now in April!

Be aware - the Heart of the Valley Triathlon has moved up by a full month!

In the past, the HOTV Tri was always held on Memorial Day weekend. Maybe thinking they'd attract more racers by moving it off the holiday, the 2013 edition will be held on Sunday, April 21st.

Hopefully, it will increase the number of racers, because it is a bit of a risky move. The last weekend in May is hardly guaranteed for good weather, but it sure has a better shot of it than the middle of April. And moving it up that far puts it just two weeks after another Corvallis triathlon, the Beaver Freezer.

Heart of the Valley Triathlon Review!

And so we came to the 12th race in the EPIC 2011 series: the Heart of the Valley Triathlon. Just a sprint tri, but with a much longer swim than the first tri in the EPIC run, the Beaver Freezer, and a much, much hillier bike.

But the first worry, as with every race this Spring in Corvallis: the weather. The forecast was for some clouds, but mostly sun and little chance of rain. Well, that would be a first. But waiting for my swim heat to start, the sun was indeed breaking through and it looked like it would be a nice day for a race.

The HOTV swim took place at Osborne Aquatic Center (just recently spared from a death sentence by a passed City of Corvallis levy - yay!). Osborne is a nice change for a triathlete that enjoys the swim. First, it's a 50 meter pool, so you can actually stretch out the stroke and not worry about spending half your swim making turns. Second, the HOTV has a 750 meter swim leg, half again and a bit more as long as the Beaver Freezer swim.

They were using both the indoor and outdoor pools to speed things along and I was in the third heat of the day in the indoor pool. Six people in my lane, which seemed like a lot to me, and I was the second to go out in my lane, with ten seconds between swimmers. The risk with indoor swim triathlons, of course, is that people have to estimate their swim times and they're rarely exact once it comes to the actual race. And so it was in my heat. I caught the person in front of me by the end of lap one, which was actually nice since it opened up the water for me. I felt very good in this swim, never too tired, and caught the last swimmer in the lane by about lap six. I got around him then finished strong to the end.

There I am checking the watch right as I got out. It read "12:02," so I hit the wall at about 11:58 or so. I wanted to get under 12 minutes, so good enough there. Please notice that there's no one else on the carpet with me. That's right...first one out of the pool! Well, in my heat anyway, and good enough for 12th overall on the swim time out of 210 racers. Sound like I'm bragging? Good! The swim is the only place I can ever brag, so don't think I won't do it!

So I hit the doors and run outside...downpour. I mean, it was just coming down! What happened to my sunshine?!

I jogged to T1 and tried to get my clothes on over my wet body with a hard rain falling. Nice. Sort of a slow transition, but I got out and started pedaling. I'm still on the mountain bike and those fat tires were just kicking up the water right in my face. On a couple of the downhills, I was leaning to the side to try to keep the water from washing over my face like a waterfall.

As I mentioned, this is a hilly bike course, although for the first time, the race organizers took the bike leg down from 12 miles to 11 miles. And they did it by taking one decent sized hill out from the middle of the course. Fine by me. The shorter course helped me to a time that was five minutes faster than I rode two years ago - and I had a tri bike then!

Headed into T2, always fast when you're riding a mtn. bike with your running shoes already on, and I had one serious issue. My shoes were sopping wet. And that would be the negative about wearing your running shoes on the bike leg; if they're wet, you're running in them anyway.

That's me yelling at the wife that I could use some dry shoes. Alas, there were none to be found. So off I went onto the run leg. Sort of a strange course, running the exact same loop twice before finishing on the Linus Pauling Middle School track, but it's totally flat, so I'm not complaining. I felt a little off at first, but soon got into a decent stride and actually finished the run exactly three minutes faster than in 2009. Only about a minute off my recent 5k race times, so I was very happy with the finish here.

Overall, 1:25:30. Clearly not fast, but much faster than two years ago, and with a slower bike, so I'm very pleased with the race. Check the results right here.

Onward! The EPIC rolls out two races next week: the Girls on the Run 5k on Saturday and the Run for the Hills 8k trail run on Sunday. Woot.

Old School Triathlon

Don't worry, I'm not going to subject you to yet another rant of mine about how triathlon, especially long course, is the whitest, richest, most privileged, expensive, snobbiest excuse for a sport this side of golf. No, no, I'm not going to do that.

I'm just going to say, this year, for my two Corvallis Triathlons that will be part of EPIC, The Beaver Freezer and Heart of the Valley, I'm going totally OLD SCHOOL.

-That means my Kona mt. bike on the bike leg.
-My running shoes on the pedals - no bike shoes.
-Regular old laces in the shoes - no speed laces.
-Helmet? Four years old and totally non-aerodynamic.
-Wetsuit? Swim Skin? Get real.
-Shirt? Cotton.
-Goggles? Well, the strap broke, but I tied a good knot in it.

And anyone that gets in my way on the running leg in minimalist running shoes, or God forbid, barefoot, I'm gonna kick them right in the ass. With my Nike Air Max Motos. With the big cushioning.

Join me and FIGHT THE POWER!

Race T-Shirt Roundup!

Today, let's take a quick look at the Heart of the Valley Triathlon T.

Well, it's white. White is very good. White goes with everything. Every time I get a weird turquoise race shirt, I think "why didn't they just go with white?"

But, man, it's really white. White white. Super white. And the black lettering, with a tiny bit of red, doesn't help much. This is one boring shirt. No graphic or art whatsoever. And what's with the blotchy border around the word "heart"? I'm not sure what they were trying for, but it looks like my shirt was on the tail-end of the run and the silkscreen place was running out of ink.

The back: boring. I mean, holy crap, really boring.

Final tally - good workout shirt, but hardly something you're going to sport proudly around town.

Let's give it a C+.

Ouch...

Or...

Heart of the Valley Triathlon Race Report!

First, the summary, then the details.

Summary:
Slow and painful.

Details:
There are going to be some complaints...sorry. Just remember, I'd rather be racing in a horrible race than doing just about anything else, and even at a race like this, where I didn't come close to my goal time, I'm always happy I did it. If nothing else, it was a good workout, right?

Well, to start, AA Sports needs to work out some way to not make the people in the late swim waves wait for hours before the race. You could only pick up your packet the day of the race and they closed the packet pickup at 7:45am because they wanted everyone at the race before the first heat started at 8:00am. In theory, that's great. Equality in action. Make everyone show up at the same time. In reality, it doesn't work. I arrived at Osborne Aquatic Center at 7:15am to check in and my heat started at 10:15am. That's too long to sit around a pool deck. If anything, it's unfair to the people in the later heats. By the time I started, people from the first couple heats were down at the Diary Queen having a Peanut Buster Parfait.

Anyhoo, in the water at 10:15am and pretty good for about six laps...then we started bunching. You'd think that a 50 meter pool would afford plenty of space for passing. You'd be wrong. For whatever reason, the six of us in ol' lane number four had a lot of trouble getting around each other. I came out of the water in 12:04 for 750 meters - 15th overall and almost what I was hoping for, but I was gassed from trying to fight through everyone.

And that's the end of the highlights.

T1 was pretty good, but the first steep hill comes up so fast, two blocks into the bike course, that I hadn't caught my breath from the swim. The rest of the bike course went like this: hill, hill, hill, hill, hill, dead squirrel, hill, and I came into T2 about three minutes slower than my latest practice ride on the same course.

T2 fine and I was out on the run course. No complaints here - it's actually a very flat and fast run course, but I was just toast after the hilly bike ride. Fork me, I was done. A very, very slow 5k later and I came around the Linus Pauling Middle School track for the last 400 meters...which is always a good way to end a race.

Post race was great: hot showers in the OAC, good food, and absolutely amazing weather for the second straight tri, so not all was bad.

Time to get back to training. See you out on the trails.

Heart of the Valley Results!

Yikes, that was a tough one. Photos and a full race report to come soon.

In the meantime, here are the results:

50 Meters is Hard...

So they switched the Osborne Aquatic Center Pool to 50 meters today to get it ready for Monday's HOTV Triathlon. Why not take it for a test ride, said I. It'll be a nice little practice run for the race...

Wow...it's been a long time since I've done laps in a 50 meter pool. That baby is loooooong. Swimming in 25 yard pools all the time really doesn't get you ready for a swim where you don't get to push off a wall every 30 seconds. I was already a little worried about the hilly bike course, and now I'm a bit worried about the swim as well.

Ah well, it's just another race. Start slow, finish strong...or how about start slow, finish...yep, just finish.

Let's race.

Two Weeks and Counting...

to the HOTV! I rode the bike course again on Saturday and it was perhaps more brutal than I remembered. I've also seen deer all three times I've been on the course - this time one crossed just a short way in front of me on a pretty good downhill. I hope I'm not part of a Scott and deer-colored splat on the road at the race. Let me tell you, if a deer comes out in front of me on that first screaming downhill...there won't be anything left of me or the deer. Just notify my next of kin.

Sort of a light holiday week here, but good triathlon options, so...let's race!

That'll learn ya...

All right, let's talk Heart of the Valley triathlon. More to the point, let's talk Heart of the Valley triathlon bike leg. Let's see, how can I put this? As usual, I'll try to be delicate and understated.

It's freaking brutal.

Here's a quick rundown: Three blocks out of T1, you hit the first uphill, and it's long. Then a short downhill and another fairly steep uphill. After that follows a screaming downhill that has you praying that no deer will scamper across the road. Then a fairly flat section with a slight uphill. After a right and a left, you head up another long, shallow uphill and a nice downhill...that ends at the turnaround - a horrible spot for it - as you turn around, lose all your speed, and immediately head back uphill.

So there you have it, at that point you turn around and have to ride up all the downhills we talked about earlier. It's a tough, tough bike course for a sprint tri. And for someone like me - a triathlete that suffers through the bike leg - it's exactly the kind of course that should be avoided.

So why am I racing the HOTV when there's so many other tri's to choose from? Simple...I signed up before I rode the course.

That'll learn ya, indeed.

Ah well, no time like the present to kick up the bike training.

Get your meter out of my yard...

...and stay off the lawn, you stinkin' kids!

Now what was I talking about? That's right - I swam my first "test" time trial for the Heart of the Valley Triathlon yesterday: 12:23 for 750 meters. Not bad, although I'm hoping to swim it around 11:30 in the actual tri.

Anyhoo...meters? As you may recall, or not depending on your drink of choice, I grew up swimming meters. But trying to think back, I can't recall swimming in a single 50-meter pool since I swam my last year on the Wapato Swim Team (gulp...24 years ago!). Let's see:

-Dixon? Yards.
-Osborne Aquatic Center? Well, apparently it can be meters, but they always have the barrier (they call it the "bulkhead") in the middle of the pool, so I think it's usually about 25 yards.
-Arne Hanna Aquatic Center (Bellingham)? Yards.
-Bellingham Athletic Center? This is a good one - feet! I think it was 50 feet...in a dark, little cave...five good strokes and you were done with the lap.

I don't know, I'm sure there's more, but the point is every pool I've been in since high school has been yards, not meters. So to prepare for the HOTV, which has a 750 meter swim, I figured I'd have to swim about 30 laps in the Dixon pool. I mean, yards...meters...what's the difference?

Quite a bit, actually. After heading to one of those fancy online conversion calculators, I realized I'd have to swim about 33 laps at Dixon to get to 750 meters! Yowza.

So don't skimp on the swim practice. If you're doing the HOTV, if the extra 250 yards don't get you, the meters will.

The map of countries that DON'T use the metric system is from Mr. Malley through wikimedia. Thanks.

Take-Away's from the Beaver Freezer...

Just a few things that I realized during the Beaver Freezer on Saturday that should help me in my next race:

1- I need to drop 10 pounds....there's probably nothing that would lower my times on the bike and the run more than dropping some weight. It's just a sad fact of life...those of us six foot or taller that enjoy eating every meal plus snacks are at a serious disadvantage when we're trying to chase down 150 pound racers. Believe me, I saw the overall winner of the Beaver Freezer - I've got 40 pounds on him.

2- I need to hit the hills more. This is partly just coming out of the winter and good weather will help, but I really need to work on my hill running. There was one tiny little hill in the Freezer run (we hit it three times) and I struggled up that thing every lap.

3- I need a longer swim. 17th fastest out of the water and 95 fastest overall. That tells you something.

4- I need to sign up for another race immediately, so I have something to work towards right now. HOTV...here I come! And like they knew what my #3 take-away was, the HOTV increases the swim length compared to the Beaver Freezer by 50%, while leaving the bike leg and the run leg the same distance. Nice.

RACES FOR WEEK OF APRIL 13th TO APRIL 19th

Beaver Freezer Race Report!

Yes, Carson is in her jammies in these photos - what can I tell you? She'd never get out of them if we didn't force her to. Check out my race report after the photos!

At long last, the Beaver Freezer has come...and now it's gone.

The Freezer, like many indoor-swim triathlons, has multiple heats to try to get everyone in the pool. There were 10 heats, with 32 people in each heat. Eight lanes in the Dixon pool at OSU, with four swimmers in each lane. Everyone had preassigned lanes and starting positions - I was in lane 1 (closest to the exit door - nice) and started 2nd in our lane; five seconds after the first swimmer started. The swim was 500 yards and I had a good swim (6:56), but never caught the girl in front of me - she was fast. We both lapped the swimmer that started third on our last lap, so I felt we were moving pretty well.

I had a decent T1. Nothing special, but not too slow. I wondered for a moment about gloves and jacket, but decided to forego both and I'm glad I did. The weather, after raining all week, was absolutely gorgeous today, with sun and very little wind. I felt bad for the early heats, the first heat went in the water at 7:30, because there was frost on the ground at that time this morning. Their ride must have been chilly.

The bike went very well. As always, this was the leg I was dreading, but I finished about five minutes faster than I was shooting for, so I was very pleased there. I even passed a couple of fast bikers on a good downhill - I told them if they were fat like me, they could go faster downhill too! Of course, they passed me back up on the next uphill. The old Softride is still a treat to ride - I love that bike.

T2 was fast, although it actually looks sort of slow on the results because the run to the end of the bike racks, then back to my rack, was loooooong.

The run felt slow, and was pretty slow. After about halfway through, I just felt like the tank was on "E". I just told myself to keep plodding along and when I saw, on the third and last lap, that my time was going to be pretty good, I tried to turn it up just a bit. I don't think it worked - I plodded right to the finish.

Overall though, I was about as fast as I wanted to be for this first tri of the year, and much faster than I was afraid I was going to be for this first tri of the year. Fast enough to get a pretty, green, fourth-place ribbon for my age group. Yah!

Day off tomorrow, then back to work on Monday. I think I'll look for a run, maybe a 10k in a few weeks, then the Heart of the Valley Tri on Memorial Day for my next tri.

One in the books for 2009!
