Best Running Song for March - Youngblood Hawke - We Come Running

Geez, barely getting this one in before the wire...

Once in a while, you get a song that combines snappy running tunes with catchy running lyrics - and here I present "We Come Running" by Youngblood Hawke. I mean the chorus repeats the line "we come running." What do you want from me!?!

Anyway, this is a poppy little tune from a sunny L.A. band that, and I hate to say it, probably has "one hit wonder" written all over them. Still, it's a good tune. It definitely gets caught in your head - you'll probably be singing it for the rest of the day.

Speaking of catchy tunes with great running lyrics, check out Paolo Nutini with "New Shoes."

Just like Paolo, there's nothing that can improve my mood like putting on a brand new pair of running shoes! And I imagine the line "I'm short on money, but long on time," applies to plenty of runners as well.

Rock that run!

New RaceCenter NW Magazine Article - Triathlon: More for Less

Yes, "More for Less." No, I was never destined to be a copywriter. But hey, we all have our talents, as small as they may be.

So there is a new issue of RaceCenter out now! Please run quickly to your nearest running/shoe store and/or Jamba Juice and grab a copy. Oh, and get a Strawberry Surf Rider while you're there - Nom Nom!

If you're one of those new-fangled kids with your fancy iPhone-type device, then head to the digital version of RaceCenter right here.

This month we're concentrating on how to race triathlon without being a rich, middle-aged white person. Good luck!

Seriously though - if you read my blog, you know my general view on triathlons. Fantastic sport that is pricing itself out of range for most normal people...and getting worse as the sport becomes more popular! Grrrr...

Anyhoo, my article, Triathlon: More for Less, offers up a few choice ideas on how to bring down the costs. First, be a superstar and get sponsored. For the rest of my great ideas, go read the article.

I want to give a quick thanks to Scott Benjamin, Blair Bronson and Chris Bagg for answering my triathlon questions with humor, grace and knowledge. Thanks guys, I hope you all have a great upcoming tri season.

Oh, and if someone wants to buy me that $10,000 Felt as a small reward for all the outstanding writing that I do for you, at no cost to you in particular, please let me know where I can pick it up.

Are "Barefoot" and Minimalist Running Shoes Done?

Humans, right? We love the latest thing. We can't wait to jump in on the new fads. Of course, that means we're ready to jump off just as fast. And so it goes with minimalist running shoes...

Great new article on the state of the running shoe, and minimalist shoes in particular, in Running Times. Check it out right here.

And really, the great takeaway from the article is this: the first paragraph up there isn't really true! We don't jump in on the new fads. We aren't ready to give up are usual, familiar, boring, old running shoes. Sure, there is a small group that loves to jump on fads, but emphasize the "small." And don't forget that the running magazines need new articles every single month...and their websites need new stuff every single day. Of course they're going to emphasize the newest fad! They have to print something.

Here, let Running Times lay some truth upside your head:

"But here's a reality check: Minimalist shoes account for about 11 percent of the U.S. running-shoe market. Remove the Nike Free from consideration, and sales of the remaining minimalist models constitute about 4 percent of the U.S. market." Quote from article by Scott Douglas.

And I can tell you from experience here on the campus of OSU, there are a LOT of Nike Frees around that never, ever get run on.

Now, if we can just get Nike to stop screwing up my favorite models of trainers. I'm looking at you, Nike Pegasus!

Today's Half Marathon Workout - Week Four

OK, so I'm in Week Four of a nine-week half marathon program. Getting ready for the Corvallis Half Marathon on April 14th.

My first three weeks have been like this: 42 miles, 43 miles and 30 miles. Week four will be 42 miles total again.

So today's workout is 6 miles, alternating 3:00 minutes at my 10k pace, which is around 7:30, with 1:00 minute jogs.

Sounds interesting.

Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon

So they held the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon last weekend...yes, last weekend. With an open water swim, in the San Francisco Bay, water temperature around 55 degrees.

To absolutely no one's surprise, the swim conditions were brutal...and one competitor died. Story from Slowtwitch here. Another race article here.

Sure, it's easy to say in hindsight, but come on, who thought that swimming in the Bay in early March would go well? They moved the race from its usual date in June because of a conflict with the America's Cup, but really, was there no other warm-weather weekend available?

Here's a photo gallery of the race from Slowtwitch so you can see the conditions for yourself.

The whole thing is sad. A needless death and a needless black eye for the sport of triathlon.
