New RaceCenter NW Magazine Article - Five Ways to Avoid Running Burnout

Yep, still alive, still running, still writing.

And the latest article is out, Make a Change! Five Paths to Avoid Running Burnout. I cover all those maladies that you say you never do, but of course always do. Like overtraining and lack of sleep and no goals and too much pavement and...well, you know.

But I forgot one remedy that just worked for me! Go buy a new pair of shoes already! Apparently, my old ones were worn out because when I strapped on the new Mizuno Wave Riders, my legs suddenly felt fresher than they had in weeks. And I had my first workout where I actually felt like I was running fast in weeks.

New shoes! Who knew?

New RaceCenter NW Magazine Article

Yes, it's been quite a while, but a new issue of RaceCenter NW has just hit the newsstands...and Jamba Juice outlets. If you're into reading things online while sitting on your rumpus room, then head right over here for the online version of the mag.

It's the big 2014 race calendar issue, so this is the one you want to make sure to grab. My article in this issue is titled "What's Your Race: Choosing the Perfect Race for You."

Sounds good. Real good.

Northwest Running and Triathlon Calendar - 2014 and Beyond

As you may have heard, since I said it in the last post, I am not continuing to write up the Northwest Running and Triathlon Calendar for The Two R's. It took a metric boatload of time every week to write it and I'm just taking a break from it. Maybe it will come back at some point and maybe it won't. I'm not sure.

I started to compile the calendar on The Two R's because there just isn't a good, comprehensive, Northwest calendar out there. As you'll see...

If you need to find a race, try one of these:

-RaceCenter NW
Good mix of races from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.

-Northwest Runner
Almost exclusively Washington State races

-Willamette Valley Road Runners Calendar
Mostly Oregon, obviously, but also some Washington, California and Hawaii

-Eclectic Edge Racing Calendar
Races put on by EER, mainly in Oregon

-3 Rivers Road Runners Calendar
Mainly Washington races in the Tri-Cities area

-Running in the USA
Choose races by any state in the USA

The problem with all of these, and pretty much any race calendar, is they're mostly by submissions from race directors, or they're just for races put on by one particular group. I've yet to find a good compiler site. There isn't a truly comprehensive site for Northwest racing. That's what I was trying to accomplish with my calendar.

Good luck out there.

New RaceCenter NW Article - The Off Season

Sort of late on this announcement, but yes, there is a new RaceCenter NW issue out there and yes, I've got a new article in it.

Check out the digital online version right here.

Check out the old school, hard copy version at a Jamba Juice or running store near you.

I was actually very happy with the article this month: "Hit the Snooze Button: Using the Off-Season as a Time to Rest, Reflect and Refocus." You might think I'd always be happy with my articles, but you'd be wrong. I always try to write a good article, but some just come together better than others. I'm definitely not an easy critic on my own writing - some of my articles are weak. Why? Well...even for a short little 1500-word article, it's a complex process.

First, the topic. My editor, Brook Gardner, comes up with most of the article topics with a little input and adjustment from me. Then I'm on my own. Since I'm almost always writing about running or triathlon, most of the topics are very interesting to me, but once in a great while...meh.

Second, what has already been written about the topic. I want enough out there that I can get a little background, but not so much that everyone has already heard about it and is bored by yet another article on the subject.

Third, and this is a biggie, the people I can round up to interview. This can be tough. Sometimes you can't find anyone that really wants to talk to you. Sometimes you can find them, but they're just not a very good interview (and I'm sure as hell not a professional interviewer, so I'll take some of the blame here).

And then, of course, how much time I leave myself to actually write the article before my deadline. I can be a bit of a procrastinator.

But once in a while, it all comes together and I write something that I'm quite proud of. And this article is one of those.

Hope you enjoy.

New RaceCenter NW Article Out Now - Toughest Half Marathons in the Northwest

Yes, the new issue of RaceCenter is out and yes, I have a new article in the new issue of RaceCenter. And it's out.

So head over to your closest running-type store or the nearest Jamba Juice and pick up a copy. Also, pick up a Peanut Butter Moo'd Smoothie 'cause that thing is like smoothie crack. It's good! And not nearly as good for you as most Jamba Juice smoothies, so it's like a double-bonus!

If you're all geeked-up and techie, just head over here and you can read the whole thing online. It's what all the cool kids are doing.

So my article is on the most brutal half marathons in the Northwest. And no, I have run exactly none of them. I've heard there are such people out there; freaks that look for the most difficult race possible. But I've never been one of them and I never plan to be. Still, after months of careful research, planning, interviews and an unhealthy relationship with Google, I found 10 such races just for your enjoyment. Or not. If you're like me. Which you probably should be. Because I'm pretty awesome.

But I digress. There are other great articles and such in the new issue, but I'll be honest, I haven't read them yet, so I'm not going to spout off about them too much. Max "F-ing" King has an interesting article on maintaining your fitness as you age. Well, it's interesting to me, because I'm older than hell, so I'll definitely be reading that one soon. (yes, I did say Max "F-ing" King because Max is perhaps the most amazing runner on the planet, and I just feel that having King as a last name isn't quite enough - he needs an expletive within his name so there is absolutely no question what kind of person you're dealing with. This also works with Michael "F-ing" Jordan and Dr. "F-ing" Seuss.)

See you out on the race course. You know, the easy, flat ones...

New RaceCenter NW Magazine Article - Triathlon: More for Less

Yes, "More for Less." No, I was never destined to be a copywriter. But hey, we all have our talents, as small as they may be.

So there is a new issue of RaceCenter out now! Please run quickly to your nearest running/shoe store and/or Jamba Juice and grab a copy. Oh, and get a Strawberry Surf Rider while you're there - Nom Nom!

If you're one of those new-fangled kids with your fancy iPhone-type device, then head to the digital version of RaceCenter right here.

This month we're concentrating on how to race triathlon without being a rich, middle-aged white person. Good luck!

Seriously though - if you read my blog, you know my general view on triathlons. Fantastic sport that is pricing itself out of range for most normal people...and getting worse as the sport becomes more popular! Grrrr...

Anyhoo, my article, Triathlon: More for Less, offers up a few choice ideas on how to bring down the costs. First, be a superstar and get sponsored. For the rest of my great ideas, go read the article.

I want to give a quick thanks to Scott Benjamin, Blair Bronson and Chris Bagg for answering my triathlon questions with humor, grace and knowledge. Thanks guys, I hope you all have a great upcoming tri season.

Oh, and if someone wants to buy me that $10,000 Felt as a small reward for all the outstanding writing that I do for you, at no cost to you in particular, please let me know where I can pick it up.

New RaceCenter NW Article Out Now - Boutique Marathons

No, I don't really know what "Boutique Marathon" means either. To me a marathon is "big" or it's "small." You know it when you see it.

But anyhoo, in the brand spanking new issue of RaceCenter NW magazine - and you can see the complete digital edition right here - the R's has a new article titled "Boutique Marathons in the Northwest." Sure, I used the term "boutique." I'm not afraid to say it. I even mention in the article that "Boutique Marathon" means a race with fewer than 1000 runners, although I just totally made that up. Seems right, I don't know.

This issue of RaceCenter also has the incredible 2013 Event Guide, which lists all (well, most) of the 2013 races that you'll be looking forward to (to which you'll be looking forward). Plus, it's got an article on the cycling Boswell's. And the yearly Tri Northwest Rankings, for you three-sport folks. Hey, it's just a great issue.

If you're old-school, like me, you can pick up a hard copy of the mag at most running shoe stores and Jamba Juice locations.

Race on.

Johanna Olson Passes from Brain Cancer

If you've been following Johanna's blog, you probably knew this was coming soon...Johanna passed away yesterday after a long fight against brain cancer.

A tribute to Johanna from Runner's World.

I had the opportunity to interview Johanna a while back for RaceCenter and found her to be a wonderful, polite and, of course, a great and knowledgeable runner!

Go out on a run, appreciate that you can, and give Johanna a good thought while you're running.

Nanowrimo - I'm Late for a Very Important Date!

OK, I had to take some time off to finish up an article for RaceCenter (look for it in February 2013!), and now I'm behind on my novel for Nanowrimo.

Not all is lost though. Now I just have to average 1900 words a day instead of 1667. I think I can handle it. I'll also try to get some new excepts up soon.

Wish me luck!

New RaceCenter NW Article Hits the Stands - Cross Country and Cyclocross

It's true, I've got another faboo new article out in the latest issue of RaceCenter NW - at a Jamba Juice near you!

Or if you're lazy as dirt, just head over to the RaceCenter Digital Edition and you'll be able to keep your ass firmly planted in your couch. You're welcome.

So let's see if there's anything worth looking at, besides the article from the R's Writing Factory of course:

-Well, the cover is cool. I'm excited about finally getting back out there for a trail race in a couple weeks, at the Condor 25k, and this cover picture gets me thinking about running on that lovely, soft dirt.

-After a bunch of pretty, full-page ads, we get Brook Gardner's Editorial on page 12. Brook makes some good points about the minimalist movement and not following fads and getting a shoe that actually works for you. Or as I've said, more succinctly, many times, "get a real pair of shoes, for God's sake - those Five Fingers will just end up at the bottom of your closet."

-Some Race Briefs: Seattle Marathon (which I won't run until they get a new RD), Nike Cross Nationals coming to Portland, Stumptown XC coming up (I hope to make it to a race), tons o' Jingle Bell Runs, Jeff Browning showing them who's boss at the Wasatch 100, and Cyclocross news. All good stuff, all informative.

-An informative article on Fueling for Late-Day Energy, for those pesky evening races.

-My homeboy Max King talking about getting your Mental Schwerve on. (I know this is a family blog and all, but does anyone else read Max King and have your brain instantly translate it as "Max F*cking King"? Mine does. I mean, the guy is just incredible.)

-Chris Bagg, tri dude extraordinaire, talks about the bennies of Cyclocross.

-USATF Oregon Stuff.

-Jeff Browning talks about the race from the cover photo: the TransRockies Run.

-Some amazing writer with the amazing name of Scott Lommers writes an article about the amazing similarities between Cross Country Running and Cyclocross. And he titles the article "Criss Cross." Yes, I thought of that. Wow. Amazing.

-JD Downing talks about snow and sports and stuff. Not interested, thanks. Too cold.

-Somebody writes an article about Scott Sports. I assume it was Brook Gardner, but for some reason he didn't put a byline on it.

-Then a Shoe Guide. And hey! There's the Nike Pegasus 29. What do you know, I just reviewed that bad boy myself!

-Then the Event Calendar and we're done.

All in all, not a bad issue. Good stuff. Pick one up so you can be one of those smart people with all kinds of helpful fricking advice.

New RaceCenter Article Out Now!

Yes siree, Bob. We've got a new issue of RaceCenter NW Magazine out right now and in between the cover pages, we've got yet another fantastic article from the R's Article Warehouse.

Check out the completely free, completely digital version right here.

Women's issue and the article this time around is about Women-Owned Businesses in the Northwest, including cover girl Lauren Fleshman's company, Picky Bars.

If you haven't joined the Kindle generation yet, and still enjoy the feel of paper in your hands, go pick up a copy of the actual magazine at your nearest Jamba Juice.

New RaceCenter, New Article

Yeppers, the new issue of RaceCenter Northwest Magazine is out! And if you can't make it to a Jamba Juice or a running store, like, immediately, then just check out the totally awesome online version.

And as usual, let's take a look at this month's goodies, because, again as usual, this issue is chock-a-block full of great stuff!

First, we've got my main man, Brook Gardner, the RaceCenter editor, writing the editorial titled "The Tools for Success." Mainly about running on trails...and Brook is 6'2" and 185, in case you were wondering.

Then, we've got some short tid-bits: Cover Girl Meghan Arbogast, from Corvallis, breaks women's 50+ world record for 100k, new all women Cosmo 7k in Vancouver (Seven K?????), Thursday runs in Portland, Warrior Dash comes to North Bend, Lake Chelan Marathon, Disneyland's Tinker Bell Half Marathon, Fit Right opens new store in Hillsboro, Summer Sprint Series is back in Portland, Wahine All-Women's Tri, Alpenrose Velodrome gets a remodel, and the Yellowstone Alpine Klimb ride. Whew...

The man's man, Max King, writes an article on how to balance trail and road training. Dude, when Max talks, you take notes. Lots and lots of notes.

Then someone named Donna, with way more degrees after her name than she really needs, talks about nutrition during 24-hour relay events. My plan during my only 24-hour relay was 7-Eleven corn dogs. I'm guessing that's not Donna's plan.

After that, we've got some USATF Northwest notes.

Jeff Browning, trail superduperstar, talks about getting on the trail and "Going Long." Not my thing, but maybe someday. I think 26.2 will be my limit for a few more years still.

Tri Pro Chris Bagg talks about racing in the heat. Most of the country has had a really tough, HOT, spring already. Those of us in the Northwest are like, "What?" It's hardly been overly hot here, but maybe soon.

Then we've got "Enjoy the Run." Interviews with some top Northwest runners and triathletes talking about their long and winding roads.

A Trail Shoe Review. Way too much minimalist crap.

Finally! The new article from the R's workshop: "A Rising Tide: Handbuilt bicycles in the Northwest." Brook grabbed some nice photos for this one - they show off the nice work that these guys, and gals, are producing by hand. A bit out of my price range, but some of these handbuilt bikes are just beautiful.

Then the Event Calendar.

And the last photo is of the Boston Marathon. Hmmm...

Five days until the Newport Marathon.

Go team.

New RaceCenter NW Magazine Article is Out!

And it's about streaking!

Keep your pants on, it's not about that kind of streaking. No really, keep your pants on. This is a family blog here! Well...sometimes....

Anyway, let's start at the beginning. I've got a new article in the April/May issue of RaceCenter NW. If you're heading to your local running store soon, pick one up. If you're one of those people that likes to get all techie on us, then head over here for the fully digital version. And over here for all the digital versions of issues from the last year or so.

So let's flip through the pages here and see if there's anything to see.

OK, on the cover, we've got the Eugene Marathon. "Track Town." Sure, I guess. Then the Editor's Note. Brook talks about "humble pie," and how runners love to get a serving, or not. I'm not sure, I was sort of hungry when I read it and he kept talking about pie, and...

Next, we've got the News Briefs: Foot Traffic opens another store in Portland, ClubSport has new tech and Warrior Dash has three events in the NW in 2012. Good, good.

Oh wait, there are more Briefs: Vancouver USA Marathon news, Heaven Can Wait 5k rolls into Bend, Spokane to Sandpoint Relay, and the Germans Love Them Some Portland Marathon. Also good and very nice.

Holy smokes, more Briefs: Marathon keeps growing in the US, and Cherry Blossom Fitness Festival debuts in The Dalles....and I turned the page and there's still more...Blue Lake Tri hits 29 years, Bike MS hits Willamette Valley, and Baker City gets a Cycling Classic. Whew.

Then we've got an article from my boy Max King. Max, who recently missed a turn in the Chuckanut 50k, talks Acclimation 101 on heat and altitude. Good stuff.

Donna Marlor, who has all sorts of initials and stuff after her name, writes about Fluids, Electrolytes and Optimal Race Performance. See, if you've got the RD and the CSSD and the MD and the PhD and things like that, you get to use four-syllable words in your article title. I, personally, try to stick to one syllable: Go. Streak. Yay! I don't like to confuse people right off the bat.

Then we've got USATF stuff.

Then a good article from Jeff Browning on running your first trail 50k. And it's got a big picture of R's Fav Jenn Shelton right at the front, so you know it's got to be good reading.

Next is an article from tri stud Chris Bagg about not feeling bad when you're a loser. I've seen that guy race and I'm not sure he's the right guy to write that article - he's faster than hell. When you title an article "Surviving Disappointment," you probably should hire me to write it.

Then Teague Hatfield talks about the "offset" of running shoes. This is a touchy subject for me because I like shoes with a decent sized offset between the heel and toe, but this whole minimalism craze is driving the shoe makers to shrink the offset down. It's the reason I no longer run in the Nike Max Moto.

Then, THEN, we've got a great article from the R's about Streaking and Running. In other words, running lots of consecutive days or consecutive races. Fantastical article - you'll love it, I'm sure.

After that, an article with two of my favorite Oregon runners featured, Lauren Fleshman and Kara Goucher, talking about their Olympic plans.

Brian Burk talks about swimming in open water - one of my favorite activities, but still something that stops plenty of people from even trying outdoor tris.

Then Event Calendar and Ads and we're done. All in all, a very good issue. Quite a few articles that I'd read all the way through in this one, and trust me, with my attention span, that's saying something.

New RaceCenter Article Out Now

It's been a while, but there's finally a new article with the infamous R's byline at a Jamba Juice or running store near you!

Or if you're one of those crazy reading-your-news-on-the-web type people, you can head over here and read the whole stinking issue online. That's quality stuff right there.

So what awaits your prying eyes in this issue? Let's find out!

-First, we've got "Montana Destination Runs" and surprisingly enough, there's more than one. Just kidding there, Montana! No hard feelings, right? Don't send over any cows...or tumbleweeds...to rough me up. Joking! Again!

-Anyhoo, second is a bit on the Tri NW Rankings. Good, good...don't see my name on the list...moving on...

-Third, "Mud and Fire: the Rise of Obstacle Course Racing." Hey, that sounds like a interesting and well-written take on one of the most popular areas of running today! We should read this one immediately if not sooner.

-Fourth, a 2012 Multisport race preview.

-And of course, this is the 2012 Event Guide issue, so you've got pages and pages of race info. Sweet!

-Then you've got the usual stuff: gear guide, nutrition stuff, USATF stuff, Max King trying to outwrite me because apparently running twice as fast as me isn't enough, tri stuff from Chris Bagg, and so on.

Good, good issue. Check it out today. And tell them the R's sent ya!

Streakers Wanted!

Yes, I need to speak to a few, good streakers. Don't worry, my interest is purely scientific!

Actually, I'm writing an article for an upcoming RaceCenter NW issue about runners who have long racing streaks. So if you have run, say, 15, 20, even 25 years in a row of the same race, please give me a shout! I want to talk to you!

Let's race!

RACES FOR WEEK OF DECEMBER 19th TO DECEMBER 25th

December 24th / Christmas Marathon, Half Marathon, 10m, 5k and Duathlon / Littlerock, WA

December 24th / Jingle Bell Run 5k / Tacoma, WA

(I know it's hard to believe, but I can only find two races for this week. Two! I think this is what happens when you put Christmas Eve on a Saturday and Christmas Day on a Sunday. People don't seem to want to run on Christmas like they do on Thanksgiving, that's for sure!)

The New Cross Article is Out!

Yes, occasionally we at the R's still venture into the Writing side of the equation...even if the writing is usually about running.

But not this time! Because the new RaceCenter article is about biking! Ha!

Anyhoo, check out the online version of the new issue right over here.

So let's take a little look-see, shall we?

On the cover, we've got Max King. That guy gets around.

Then, ad, ad, ad, ad, ad, and editorial. Don't usually read those...

Some small tartlets about the Stumptown Series, Jinglebell Runs in the NW, how frackin' huge Bloomsday is, Tri stuff and Cross stuff. All interesting. Very quick, very informative, very USA Today.

Then we've got an article about cross country running written by Max King. WHAAAA?? It's not enough that the guy wins every race he's in, now he's trying to take my job too?!? Moving on...

Nutrition stuff...USATF stuff...Chris Bagg Tri stuff...Trail Running stuff...

OK, then our first feature article, about all the past finisher medals from the Portland Marathon. OOOH, look...shiny!

Another shoe guide. I don't know if you find value in these. I usually read them, but how often do you see a shoe in there that you actually wear or want to wear? I don't know, they don't do much for me.

Then, an insightful, professionally-written article on Cyclocross called "Tailgate Party on Wheels." That's good stuff there. That writer needs a raise...or a cookie...or something.

Next, a nice article on cross-country skiing. Too cold - don't care.

Then the race calendar, ad, ad, ad, ad, and the Funny Page.

Hey, nice issue. Check it out online or pick up a copy at your favorite sporting goods supplier.

Woodstock on Wheels!

Yeah, I wish I had come up with that line, but no, it was a Hood to Coast Relay spokesperson, Jude Hubber. Which leads me to...

A new article is out! That's right - new ink, hot off the presses!

So the August/September issue of RaceCenter is now on the newsstands. Grab one before they're gone. As I've mentioned, I've got a little article in there about the Hood to Coast Relay: 30 years old this year! Wow. And I still have not done it. I need to get on that.

Check out the article in digital format here.

This is also the 2011 Women's Issue with all sorts of women-like stuff to read...and inspire...if you're a woman...I guess. What do I know? Just read it.

And it's got Kara on the cover, so that's all good.

New RaceCenter Article Out!

I know, I know, the first "R" of this blog takes over for long periods of time, but the second "R" fights back every once in a while! So today, the Two R's announces the latest writerly masterpiece: No Better Time to Tri.

The new article focuses on, yes, triathlons. Mainly, beginners just getting into tris. What to work on, what to look out for, where to find help...that kind of thing. And of course, RaceCenter now comes in a very cool web version, so check it out immediately!

On the cover of the new issue is Christian Isakson of Portland, the crazy fellow who did five Ironman tris in five days in Hawaii. Yes, five Ironmans in five days.

There's also a good article on how Triathlons can literally save a life, as in the case of John Howe, who overcame drug addictions by focusing on tris, among other things.

If that doesn't do it for you, there's a trail shoe review.

Still not happy? Well, there's a big ol' photo of Kara Goucher, looking as fine as ever, just a few months after having her son. If that doesn't do it for you, then I got nothin'.

New RaceCenter Article Out at Last!

Yeah, it's been a while. I haven't had anything published in quite some time. Not that I wasn't writing. Trust me, I was writing. Just nothing for the public eye in a while.

Well, I'm back! And maybe better than ever. Not sure about that part really. But I do have a new article out and you can see it right here, in the new RaceCenter electronic format! Woot!

The article is about marathon training programs, which I don't know anything about because I'm a stuck-up S.O.B. that does all my training on my own. But when has not knowing something ever stopped me from writing about it, right? Right!

So check it out. It's a good read, if I do say so myself.

And, of course, I do.
