Hansons Marathon Method - Review in Progress - Day 31 of 123

OK, we're officially a quarter of the way through the Hansons program. And today marked the longest run of the first five weeks - a 12 miler.

And I need to find the chapter that talks about training paces and double-check this, but the "Training Intensities Pace Chart" in the book states to run the "long" Sunday runs (as opposed to the "easy" Sunday runs) at a pace that's in between your race pace and your easy pace. For me, my easy pace is 8:50-9:50 and my race pace is 7:50. The book states my "long" pace should be 8:30.

So that's what I tried to do today.

I was mostly successful, although I did a little off-road running, which always slows me down a bit.

Here's my pace, with a couple miles that have stop-lights in them:

And here's my moving pace, which basically removes the time waiting at lights:

I seemed to lose my focus a bit on mile 9, but other than that I stayed pretty close to what I wanted. Even with that off mile, I averaged 8:40, so pretty close to what I was supposed to do. I was very happy that I was able to close with my last two miles of the 12 both under my goal of 8:30. My legs actually felt fresher than they did yesterday. I'm hoping that's a good sign and not just some fluke thing.

Back at it tomorrow. See you then.

Run for the Hills 30k Trail Run Race Review and Results

Little late on this one, but better late than blah, blah...

Just looking for results? Here you go.

So anyhoo...last week was the Run for the Hills trail run, usually just an 8k in the Bald Hill area, but a new 30k was added this year.

As I've mentioned before, I signed up for the 30k way back when before I realized I was going to be well into training for my fall marathon, and in fact, in my fourth week of the Hansons plan. My scheduled workout for the Sunday of the Run for the Hills was to be an easy 8 miles. Instead, I was staring at 18.5 miles with about 3000 feet of climbing. Ouch.

So the whole plan for this one was to go slow and not get injured. I still have nightmares of rolling my ankle at last year's Condor Trail Run, which scuttled my training for the California International Marathon. Plus, I didn't want to go full out and be so sore and tired that I'd have to skip my scheduled marathon workouts. So, as you can see here, I started conservatively...that's me, fifth from the very back as we head out from the start line.

The first hill we tackled was Bald Hill, which was fine as I run it all the time, but then we quickly moved on toward Fitton Green, which I don't run all the time, and it was steep going.

I moved past a few people and settled into my pace. It was an interesting course as there were a good number of out and back spokes. So you ended up seeing the same people over and over and could gauge if you were gaining or losing ground. I didn't much care, but for someone up front, I could see that it would be a good course to know exactly where you're at relative to the other runners.

There are a few "ankle-breaker" sections that aren't really "trail." They're more "beaten down weeds over mole hills." You've got to slow down a bit on those.

We finally made it way out on the trail through Fitton Green where it runs along Marys River. Although I walked plenty on the steeper uphills, I never felt too bad. My pace looked OK as long as I wasn't heading up the really steep stuff.

The race director had told us at the beginning of the run that they had decided against placing a water stop at the top of Bald Hill, which turned out to be a tough decision, for me, in retrospect. As we neared the end of the race, maybe a mile and a half to go, we came up the back side of Bald Hill and hit the summit. There was a race marker sign that read "straight." Unfortunately, it was placed about 15 feet in front of a "Y" on the trail. There was no "straight," there was only left or right. I figured maybe they meant to stay on the main, bigger, trail. Another guy at the top agreed with me and we started down the horse trail. About halfway down, I realized we had taken the wrong trail. That's a steep downhill - there was no way I was turning around and going back up. I knew where it came out, down on the bike path, and I knew we'd have to run a little extra to get back on track, but it seemed like the better option. As I came to the bottom of the trail, I came up on another runner who had taken the wrong trail as well. After the obligatory "wrong trail?" and "yep, wrong trail," we headed back on the bike path toward the Fairgrounds parking lot.

I definitely lost a couple places - I saw some people had already finished that were behind me pretty much the whole race - but what are you going to do?

Amazingly enough, even though I was pretty sore and tired, I managed through my Hansons workouts the entire week after the race. Didn't miss a one.

The shirt is clean and sharp-looking. Sort of a different feel for a tech shirt - definitely has more of a cotton feel. I'm not a huge fan of white race shirts, but it's pretty nice all the same.

Good race. With luck, I won't have to worry about marathon training next year and can really race it.

Thanks to Jim MacDonald for the photos.

Hansons Marathon Method - Review in Progress - Day 30 of 123

Well, it was hot, my legs were shot and I had no desire to run. That said, my splits weren't nearly as bad as I feared they would be. I went toward Philomath and even did a couple trips around the Philomath High School track, just for a little change of pace.

Not exactly a great way to head into Sunday, the long run day. I sure hope my legs feel better tomorrow than they did today.

Talk to you then.

Hansons Marathon Method - Review in Progress - Day 29 of 123

Just another easy Friday, but the Hansons bumped it up just a touch. Instead of the usual 6 miles easy, I had to run 7 miles easy.

Even though the pace doesn't look too bad...

I don't know if it's the whole "cumulative fatigue" thing or I'm still feeling the after-effects of the Run for the Hills 30k, but man, my legs are tired the past few days.

Ah well, onward and upward.

Northwest Running and Triathlon Calendar - July 2013 - July 4th Independence Day Fourth Runs!

Well, you shouldn't have a problem finding a Fourth of July race this year - there are 36 of them - and I don't think you'll have to travel far for that half marathon either - there are 12 of them - so strap on the running shoes and go!

Of course, if you're really adventurous, the most absolutely insane thing to do over the Independence Day weekend would be to sign up for all the FIRECRACKER QUADZILLA!!!

Yes, you can sign up for four marathons in four days! Or if you're some kind of Nancy-boy, you can sign up for four half marathons in four days!

Truly insane.

Hansons Marathon Method - Review in Progress - Day 28 of 123

What do you know? It's already Thursday again...

That means it's tempo day. So a half-mile warmup, a 6 mile tempo run at 7:47 (just under my goal pace of 7:49) and a half-mile cooldown, for 7 miles total.

I ran it on the treadmill again, which some might think would make it easier, but if anything, I think the consistency of speed and absolutely no stopping at stoplights, or crosswalks or slowing for uphills or being helped by downhills...I think the treadmill is just as tough, if not tougher, for a tempo run.

It trashed me pretty good anyway.

Hansons Marathon Method - Review in Progress - Days 26 and 27 of 123

I'm a little behind on my reports here, but today's a rest day, so we should be caught up now.

First, let me just say my legs are done. I mean, they're dead. My legs are dead.

That 30k trail run on Sunday is not a recommended part of training program, I'm telling you right now.

But what's done is done, so I gutted out the last two days of Hansons workouts (well...almost), gritting my teeth the whole way.

Monday:

Hansons: 6 miles easy

R's: 5 miles easy

Tuesday:

Hansons:
-1.0 mile warmup
-5 x 1k at 7:00 pace
-5 x .25m at 9:50 pace, in between the 1k's
-1.0 mile cooldown

R's:
-.5m warmup
-5 x 1k at 7:15 pace
-5 x .25m at 9:50 pace, in between the 1k's
-.5m cooldown

So yes, I cheated a bit, but frankly I was impressed I got as close as I did to the true workouts. I'm happy.

Starting Thursday, we're back on the plan full-time, with no distractions.

Northwest Running and Triathlon Calendar - June 2013

Sort of a light schedule this week...I'm thinking most race directors were already looking at the July 4th weekend and thinking "That's what I'm talking about!" So look for a bigger list of races next week.

Except Montana didn't seem to get the memo...they've got a bunch of races this week. Go Montana!

Hansons Marathon Method - Review in Progress - Days 24 and 25 of 123

Well, that was a tough one.

OK, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, I've strayed from the Hansons plan for just a few days. Why? To run the Run for the Hills 30k. Yeah, it was long. And hilly. And I took a wrong turn at the very end. I'll write a full review soon, but check out the elevation profile above.

As for the Hanson's, I'll get back on track tomorrow, but here's what the last three days should have been and what they actually were.

Friday:
Hansons: 6 miles easy
R's: 4 miles easy

Saturday:
Hansons: 8 miles easy
R's: 3 miles easy

Sunday:
Hansons: 8 miles easy
R's: 18.6 very hard

Back at it tomorrow.
