Is the Barefoot Running Fad Over?

If you're at all like me, you have a lot of strongly held beliefs, but don't broadcast them too loudly...until you see the science!

So, even though I've already told you that the whole barefoot running and minimalist running thing is pretty much done, when I read the The Science of Sport guys saying the exact same thing, I knew I had to bring it up again.

Because...SCIENCE!

So check your head here, as the Science of Sport guys explain "Minimalism as a fad and inconsequential footstrikes?"

Sounds sciency, right?

Damn right.

  1. I have saying the same thing here

The sales of minimalist shoes are down 10% in first quarter of 2013 to only 4% marketshare (motion control shoes are up 24%)
The number of Google searches for barefoot and minimalist running is down
All the most recent evidence (and there has been a lot) says there is no benefit in terms of injury reduction and running economy.

  2. Thanks Craig. I haven't seen your site before but it looks fantastic. I'm a big fan of the science behind it all, like you.

I just wish people would accept the fact that there is no "one size fits all" solution in the running world. Anyone that has run in a popular race lately has seen that there is a tremendous variety of body sizes and types and running form out there. There just isn't going to be one type of shoe that will work for everyone.

Can minimalism, or even barefoot running, work for some? Sure. But it won't work for everyone.

Find what works for YOU and get out there and run.

  3. I have no problems with anyone doing barefoot, Pose, Chi, minimalist, etc - the only two issues I have are:

    1) The almost religious like fanaticism that they try to impose their views on everyone else (ie one size fits all).
    2) The misuse, misunderstanding and misquoting of the science that they so often use (ie they lie about the research).

Different running forms/techniques load different tissues differently - its usually 6 of one or a half dozen of the other.

Forefoot striking/minimalism is probably the best thing for anterior compartment syndrome. Its would be a disaster for post tib dysfunction.
